Occasionally I see statements that “Africa is a continent” online, often wrapped in posturing that the bearer of this fact has esoteric wisdom and that lesser mortals are dumb. This reminds me of my old joke about vanity:

Consider how people can be confused. South America is a continent and South Africa is a country.
